5 Stages of Healing Emotional Trauma

After 10,000+ hours of client work and diving into the research, here are the 5 Stages of Healing Emotional Trauma:

1. Create a safe connection

2. Validate the emotional experience.

3. Empathize with those emotions.

4. Repaid the wound & set limits.

5. Transcend the trauma.

Safe relationships are containers for healing trauma.

Studies show that what is most traumatizing is not just what happened, but how we hold what happened afterwards.

In trauma-informed care we know that one of the automatic defenses to trauma is an isolation and immobilization response from the nervous system.

This is why so many survivors don’t come forward, or come forward decades later.

The body goes into a freeze and isolation response and automatically defends itself through remaining withdrawn and immobilized.

This is where trauma really takes it’s hold on survivors, when it is not shared and held alone for years or decades.

Safety and connection in relationship with others is how we heal.

It takes courage to bring your trauma into the light, on your timeframe, as you choose with whom you choose (a partner, therapist, friend, etc).

You are not alone.

You got this,

Does Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life Really Work?

The old idea that you can simply permanently change your thinking by deciding to has got to go.

Does re-framing work? Does replacing a “negative” thought with a “positive” thought work? Do affirmations work?

Yes, but…

Not how you may think.

Re-framing, challenging “distortions” in thinking and affirmations have their place, but to get permanent change, we need to go deeper.

You see, every thought, feeling and emotion has a purpose. It’s their for a reason.

And, there isn’t such a thing as a “positive” or “negative” thought or emotion. That context makes it seem like “positive” thoughts or emotions are “good” and “negative” thoughts or emotions are “bad”.

To suggest that “negative” or “distorted” thoughts aren’t accurate depiction of reality totally negates the purpose of these thoughts and feelings.

Why? Because they aren’t negative at all.

They are simply uncomfortable. They aren’t enjoyable. But they have a purpose.

To go beyond trying to modify the thought, we need to discover why the thought is there… and why it actually makes sense that the thought is there, based on your unique history and experience.

We never have a thought that doesn’t have a purpose.

Uncomfortable thoughts and feelings are typically either automatic survival responses based on past experience, or they are wise wake up calls that something needs attention.

So, while re-framing and challenging uncomfortable thoughts is important, we must also honor them and listen to them.

We must find out why they are there in the first place, where’d they come from? And what purpose are they serving? And does that purpose line up with our growth and our goals?

Then we must help the parts of ourselves that think this way start to feel safe to release those uncomfortable thoughts.

This is where Trauma Hacking™ Coaching comes in.

To get to the root cause emotional trauma that created all these thoughts in the first place.

So, to change your thoughts you’ve got to heal your trauma. That’s how you heal your life!

You got this!

26 symptoms of hidden emotional trauma? Do you have any?

Emotional trauma is so very misunderstood… let me explain…

Here are a few symptoms of unresolved emotional trauma:

01. Anxiety

02. Depression

03. Insomnia

04. Shame

05. Anger

06. Fear

07. Hypervigilance

08. Perfectionism

09. Procrastination

10. Inability to achieve goals

11. Lack of empathy

12. Bullying

13. Self-doubt

14. Not feeling worthy

15. Imposter Syndrome

16. Self-harm

17. Thoughts of suicide

18. Lack of trust in people

19. Chronic Disorganization

20. ADHD

21. Oppositional Defiance

22. Bi-polar Disorder

23. Dissociative & Disorders

24. Personality Disorders

25. Chronic Illness & Pain

26. Addiction & Substance Abuse

Most people think that trauma is an event that leads to a physical injury.

And while that’s true, there’s so much more to it.

After 10,000+ client hours, diving into research, talking with all the experts and seeing the evidence of my own practice over the past decade, it’s so clear that emotional trauma is the root cause of so many issues we face today.

Emotional trauma is something that all humans have to one degree or another.

And, it’s the elephant in the room when it comes to approaches of healing both mental health disorders, chronic health issues, personal development and spiritual practice.

The trauma-informed approach seeks to discover the root cause of why you’re not able to move forward. Without a trauma-informed approach, all you’re focusing on is symptom management.

But, there is so much more available than simply managing symptoms.

Another important thing to understand about emotional trauma as a root cause for so many problems we face is that while emotional trauma is the explanation for all kinds of destructive behavior, it does not excuse the behavior.

To change a thing, we need to understand a thing.

So if we want equal rights, to end racism, sexism, misogyny, the income gap and the polarization of our nation… we need to approach the problem at it’s root cause. not at the symptom level.

Trauma denial is a big part of why we are still stuck both on a personal level and on a national/global level.

In your efforts to grow personally, seek a trauma-informed approach.

In your efforts for social justice, seek a trauma-informed approach.

In your efforts to take care of your family, seek a trauma-informed approach.

In your efforts to improve your own mental health, seek a trauma-informed approach.

When you heal your trauma, you heal your life.

When we heal our trauma, we’ll heal the world.

Big love,

Mastin

Is there a gift in your anxiety symptoms?

Words are very powerful when it comes to how you feel.

Anxiety is a great example.

Just notice the word and how it feels to say it and read it.

The word itself can create anxiety for many. But, if you look at what anxiety actually is, it’s a physiological state made up of biochemical responses.

Anxiety is basically increased cortisol, adrenaline and blood glucose. There is also an increase in lactate. There are other components to the body’s “anxiety” response, but you get the idea.

Why does the body create more of these chemicals?

Because this cocktail of biochemistry gives you energy.

That’s it.

Why? Because you need energy in the presence of a threat to fight or flee.

And studies show that exercise, movement and long exhales reduce the symptoms of acute anxiety.

Why? Because the supply of energy your body gives you when you are “anxious” is meant to be used in motion to fight or flee.

When you don’t use up the energy provided to you by your body, bad things start to happen.

So, the answer for acute anxiety reduction is to start moving and use up your body’s energy supply. And afterwards, you can do intentional breathing with 80% of your breath is an exhale.

You can’t exhale and be in fight/flight at the same time.

If your inhales are longer than your exhales, you will active your bodies anxiety/energy responses and increase the feelings of anxiety/energy.

So, start moving & slow down your exhales for acute anxiety symptom reduction.

Your body is wise, and you are wise when you start to honor the responses you body has, instead of making them wrong.

Maybe you don’t have “Generalized Anxiety Disorder” – maybe you have a fuck-ton of energy and you’re making yourself wrong for it, instead of using it to make something.

PRO-TIP: for 10 days experiment w/ replacing the words anxiety and overwhelm with “energy” and notice how you respond.

For long term anxiety to be reduced, do Trauma Hacking™ work on your developmental & attachment trauma.

You got this!

Feel Good Friday June 15th, 2018

Happy Friday!

It’s Feel Good Friday and this week I’ve got some great recommendations for you about what I’m watching and a behind the scenes look at some of the tools I use to be a tmy best.

Before we get to this week’s Feel Good Friday recommendations, I’ve got to pause for a moment… it hit me today that we’re already half-way through June and Claim Your Power Live is almost here…

Did you get your CYP Live tix yet?

If you’ve followed along on my Instagram Stories you’ve probably noticed the physical prep-work and functional movements I’ve been doing so that I can have the vitality, energy and flexibility to be on stage for 4 full days at CYP Live.

The amount of physical effort it takes to be on stage all day requires me to get in peak physical performance before CYP Live.

I couldn’t be any more excited and ready for CYP Live. It’s going to be awesome.

Here’s this week’s Feel Good Friday…

1. “Trauma” is misunderstood

I’ve been posting about root cause trauma, trauma work and Trauma Hacking™ over on my Instagram this week and there has been some great discussions happening.

You see, trauma is misunderstood. It’s not just some big bad thing that happened to you when you were younger. A breakup, a divorce, being left alone as a child, being in a state of constant stress/anxiety, a soul-sucking job, a toxic relationship, eating toxic foods, addiction, too much work and many other things create trauma, too.

>This post on Instagram about what Trauma and Trauma Hacking™ really is started quite the conversation.

It’s worth checking out. I’m so thrilled that so many people are waking up to the idea that it’s about the trauma and healing it.

We’ve all got trauma, it doesn’t have to be scary and it’s this work that leads you to your purpose and to follow through. This post is worth checking out, so are the comments.

If you’re using or know about all the tools and are still stuck, this post will help you break through to understand the true root cause of why.

2. Creating Business Success After Trauma

You can start or grow a business that you love. If you are unclear, if you are feeling like outside forces or life is getting in the way, if you feel scared to take a leap because of the financial stress – know that that is totally normal. We’ve all been there, and I’ve been there, too.

I wanted to highlight this week’s podcast where I share my story of how I went through a professional trauma and addiction to drugs and turned it into purpose and a sucessful business.

This is an excerpt of Claim Your Power Live 2017.

I do you some strategic curse words for humor and to break patterns in the room, that’s my style. If you’re wanting to create financial or business success after trauma or major life change that’s got you stuck, you’re going to love this podcast eposide.

>Click here to listen to this week’s Power and Purpose Podcast episode.

3. Two Awesome Movies To Watch

I watched TWO great movies this week and have to recommend both to you.

It’s a little hard to admit, but the first movie you’re got to see is called “Book Club”. It’s about an older group of girlfriends who have been friends for decades and their love lives have gotten stale. They have been doing a monthly book clubs for decades and one member of the book club shakes things up by recommending and then demanding they read 50 Shades of Grey.

Then – all hell breaks loose. The writing and the story was awesome.

>Click here to watch Book Club.

The second movie is CRAZYWISE. This is an important film. This movie will move you. It speaks volumes about mental health and how it is perceived in different parts of the world. This is a MUST WATCH!

What if a psychological crisis or psychotic break wasn’t a bad thing, what if it was the beginning of a breakthrough or major life change and was actually a good thing?

CRAZYWISE goes into detail about what psychological crisis really is… and it’s worth a watch. You can’t see it in theatres, but you can rent or buy it online…

MUST WATCH!

4. Put An End to Conflicting Food Advice & Trust Your Gut

One of the most powerful things you can do to help change your life, to feel better and to get your energy back is make sure you have a healthy gut (also called your microbiome). My new favorite tool is called Viome, you can get $50 off my clicking here.

I’ve lost 10 pounds in two weeks using Viome, and I’ve never felt better. Bloating and a lot of my inflammation is gone. I’ve got more energy… all by changing to eat the exact food I need for my body. I love me some Viome. Everyone’s microbiome is totally unique, so what’ good for me, or your friend or family member may not be good for you.

What is your Viome trying to tell you? Find out right here.

5. Sharing The Inbox Love

Check out this message I received this week about coming to CYP Live in Orlando…

“I just booked my plane ticket for Claim Your Power Live.

I’ve never been so ready in my life. I am the type of person who usually waits

until the new year to start something new. No more! I’m sick of waiting.

I’m not waiting another 6 months. I’m ready NOW!

I’m bringing my a-game to Orlando. You better be ready for me!”

YES! No more waiting, can’t wait to see you soon at CYP LIVE!

OK – that’s it for this week’s Feel Good Friday!

Have a great day 🙂

Feel Good Friday May 29th, 2018

Welcome to this week’s Feel Good Friday 🙂

Quick reminder, on Friday’s I share things from this week with you like… what I’ve been reading, to products/apps, what caught my attention or a new tool that can help you get results faster and everything else that I use to get results in my life.

It’s like a sneak peek into my world, so that you can stay informed, out front and always in the know.

1. How do you find the best Functional Medicine Doctor?

A Functional Medicine Doctor is a key part of a healthy, energetic and long life. But, not all Functional Doctor’s are the same. Functional Medicine Docs don’t just treat symptoms, they also treat and focus on the root cause of why you have a dis-ease. There’s different types of Functional Medicine Doctor certifications one can get.

I did extensive research and found that IFM (The Institute for Functional Medicine) has the best certification available. If you’re looking for a Functional Medicine Doc, make sure they are IFM Certified. IFM is out front and on the cutting edge of so many amazing new healing modalities. If you don’t know where to find an IFM Functional Med doc, no worries, they have a “Find a Practitioner” feature on their website.

>Click here to find a Functional Medicine Doctor in your area.

And, if you want to see the proof about how Functional Medicine is getting amazing results?

A new study hows how a woman, who was suffering for 44 years, applied Functional Medicine in her life and had many symptoms either reversed or improved.

>Click here to see the case study on Functional Medicine.

2. Move your body

Part of my daily routine is incorporating movement first thing in the morning. AM Cardio is my jam. And, moving in many different planes, so that I have healthy joints and can speak on stage without injury.

One of the best investments I’ve made in the past year is creating a home gym (for free with saved up Amex Points!).

It saves me time and money by not having to go anywhere and getting my workout done at home.

With Claim Your Power Live coming up i’m focused on getting my body ready for peak physical performance.

I’m loving this new piece of equipment called the Flex Disc. It’s a low-impact, rolling platform that you can workout with. It’s omni-directional. You can do SO many different movements with it.

>Click here to check out the Flex Disc.

Your trainer will be impressed.

3. Anti-Inflammatory

As you may know, chronic llow-gradeinflammation is the root cause of a lot of chronic illness and problems in our bodies. We’ve got to do what we can to reduce inflammation and help our bodies heal. One of the best natural solutions for reducing inflammation is turmeric or curcumin. Problem is, in order to take advantage of it’s anti-inflammatory properties, you need to heat it up and it can take a long time. But, I’ve found a new solution that doesn’t require that and is up to 27x more bioavailable than most other turmeric products.

I’ve been taking it for the past few weeks and never felt better. I’ve lost 10 pounds (of inflammation, not fat), my joints feel great and I even took this stuff instead of an Advil for a headache and it worked! It’s called Theracurmin HP.

It’s a polyphenol. It has significant anti-inflammatory properties. I’m loving it. (Note: please consult a doctor before starting a new supplement protocol.)

>Click here to check out Theracurmin HP.

5. Biohacking Your Nervous System

This week on the Power & Purpose podcast I featured a live talk I did at the Bulletproof Conference in 2017. I talk about the real reason why we biohack, why we set goals and most importantly why unhealed emotional trauma gets in the way of meditation, yoga, prayer, biohacking…essentially any way you are trying to improve yourself.

>Click here to listen to this week’s Power & Purpose episode.

7. Sharing The Inbox Love

I wanted to share this heartwarming message I received this week in my inbox…

“Mastin…I wanted to thank you for your message.

I’m stuck at my job. It pays ok. I’m one of about 250 other employees. It’s not what my heart desires though. I’ve felt a nudge for years that I should go all-in on my own business.

What you said about 6 months being too long to do something really struck a chord with me. You’re right. I always make these plans and set goals and then when the time comes I forget about it or I find some excuse on why I should stay where I’m at.

I’m done. No more 6 month plan to start my own business. No more 3 month plan. I’m starting now. And that looks like me setting aside time everyday, to create my exit strategy now.

I’ve already took the first step and bought the domain name i’m going to use. I’m taking action now.

No more feeling stuck. Time to stop the doubt. It’s time to move forward.

Thank you.”

AWESOME SHARE! Proud of you my friend!

OK – that’s it for this week’s Feel Good Friday!

Have a great Friday 🙂

Remember to get out there, take action and make it real!

How to honor our fallen heroes

Today is Memorial Day in the US – it’s a day that we remember our fallen heroes.

This day isn’t just about a day off work or a BBQ with friends. This day is about much more.

This day is very special for me because my father fought in Vietnam and was a medic. He was there at such a young age – almost a decade younger than I am now.

To see war at such a young age, so up close and personal is something I’ve never gone through. But I have tremendous passion compassion for anyone who has served our country.

I’ve also had the privilege to work with members of the US Armed Forces who have come home and come to my events or worked with me to handle the aftermath of their experience.

The solution isn’t an easy one, but what I can tell you is that I think a lot more can be done for the brave men and women who put their lives on the line for our freedom. Because I’ve worked up close and personal with veterans, I’m starting to think about how we can help them integrate back into civilians lives – not just to get by, but to thrive and be truly fulfilled. I think we owe that to them.

As I thought about what to write for Memorial Day, I can’t help but think about being a hero. I mean, that’s what the men and women who put their lives on the line for our country are – they are heroes.

We may not know all their names. We may not know all their stories. But nonetheless each and every one of them are heroes.

What is a hero?

I think this is perhaps the best definition I’ve heard – it comes from philosopher, professor and mythologist Joseph Campbell (who wrote the book “Hero with a Thousand Faces” – so he should know a thing or two about heroes).

Joseph Campbell said:

A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.

I think this is so true and something that guides my life each day. I remember reading this quote early in my sobriety. And it was a wake up call for me to make my life about something more than just myself.

Hearing this quote and trying to embody it meant I had to change everything. Tony Robbins says that life opens up when we trade the need for significance for the need to serve and contribute.

This is truly a heroic transformation.
And I see so many clients making this shift. From just a career about certainty and importance to a vocation about serving others.

And I think us; each of us, making this shift is vital to not only our own happiness and fulfillment, but really the best way to honor those that gave their lives so that we can have a shot at freedom.

America was founded on freedom. Many have died for freedom. Let’s not be scared of our freedom.

You are free to make new choices. To leave unhealthy relationships. To set new standards. To decide to take your career into your own hands. We are free to forgive. To begin anew today.

Let’s not be scared of this freedom. Let’s celebrate it. And most importantly let’s act on it. How many have given the ultimate sacrifice that that we could?

In the comments below let me know how you are going to celebrate your freedom.

Today, let’s thank all our fallen heroes for what they’ve given so that we could be free.

And Dad, I’m happy you made it through. Your strength inspires me every day.

Remember to get out there, take action and make it real!

And a powerful experience to get you unstuck and headed towards a purposeful life, career or business. It’s inner game work and it’s power.

P3 is a “get it done” implementation retreat for your business. Come, implement, get it done. P3 is rocket fuel to start or scale your dream business.

10 Amazing Things You Can Learn From Your Poop

I’ve had the privilege to be behind the scenes with a company that is leading the charge to change the healthcare and mental health worlds.

That company is Viome and they are out front when it comes to all things microbiome, gut health and wellness.

You see, if you want to feel better, improve your mood, maintain a normal weight, not have inflammation in your body and reverse any chronic disease or illness, getting your microbiome in balance is the key.

Most of us have toxic microbiome’s and that means we have a toxic body and life. A toxic microbiome is the root cause of many of the physical problems we experience each day.

Things like diabetes, obesity, some cancer’s, Parkinson’s, arthritis and many other chronic illnesses are correlated to the microbiome.

It’s become self-evident and obvious to me that if you are going on any spiritual journey, personal development path or trying to get more energy or just feel better, you’ve got to start with the microbiome.

Same goes for improving your mental health.

I recently co-authored a blog with Viome’s CEO Naveen Jain and their Chief Medical Officer Dr. Helen Messier MD, PhD called “10 Amazing Things You Can Learn From Your Poop” and I am bringing this blog to you now. It was a labor of love and I hope you will see just how powerful your poop and microbiome are.

Viome and it’s science has been endorsed by Dr. Mark Hyman, Dave Asprey, Dr. Oz, Dr. Tom O’bryan, Dr. Michael Murray and many others.

And, if you are ready to sign up for Viome and get your microbiome in balance, I’ve arranged for $50 off: viome.com/MASTIN

10 Amazing Things You Can Learn From Your Poop

Hardly a day goes by without a research study or article published talking sh*t—or more precisely, talking about the gut microbiome. When it comes to cutting-edge innovations in medicine, all signs point to the microbiome. Maybe we should have listened to Hippocrates: “All disease begins in the gut.”

Your microbiome is mostly located in your gut and contains trillions of little guys and gals called microbes. If you want to optimize your health, biohack your body, make progress against chronic disease, or know which foods are right for you—almost all of this information can be found in your microbiome.

Viome offers technology to measure your microscopic organisms and their behavior at a molecular level. Think of it as the Instagram of your inner world. A snapshot of what’s happening inside your body. New research about the microbiome is changing our understanding of who we are as humans and how the human body functions.

It turns out the microbiome may be mission control for your body and mind. Your healthy microbiome is part best friend, part power converter, part engine, and part pharmacist. At Viome, we’re working to analyze these microbial functions and recommend a list of personalized food and supplements to keep these internal complex machines in a finely tuned balance.

We now have more information than ever before about what your microbiome is doing, and it’s going to help you and the rest of the world do a whole lot better. The new insights emerging from microbiome research are changing our perception of what keeps us healthy and what makes us sick. This new understanding of the microbiome activities may put an end to conflicting food advice and make fad diets a thing of the past.

What are these new insights showing us? The information is nothing short of mind-blowing. The value of your poop just got an upgrade.

Here are some of the amazing things we’ve learned from our work at Viome.

1. Was Popeye wrong? Why “health food” isn’t necessarily healthy.
Each week there is a new fad diet released, discussed, and followed. The newest “research” shows that this is now the superfood to eat for everyone. But, too often, the fad diet is just a regurgitation of what worked for one person and shouldn’t be followed by everyone else.

For example, we’ve been told to eat our greens and that greens and nuts are “anti-inflammatory,” but this is actually not always true. Spinach, bran, rhubarb, beets, nuts, and nut butters all contain oxalate. We now know that oxalate-containing food can be harmful, unless you have the microbes present that can metabolize it into a non-harmful substance.

30% of Viome customers do not have the microbes to metabolize oxalates properly. In other words, “healthy foods” like spinach are actually not healthy for these people.

Looks like not everyone should follow Popeye’s food plan.

2. Aren’t foods containing “antioxidants” always good for everyone?
Just like oxalates, polyphenols in foods are usually considered very healthy, but unless you have microbes that utilize specific polyphenols, you may not get full benefit from them. One example is a substance found in these foods called ellagic acid. We can detect if your microbiome is metabolizing ellagic acid and converting it into urolithin A. It is only the urolithin A that has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Without the microbes to do this conversion you will not benefit from the ellagic acid in foods.

Examples: Walnuts, raspberries, pomegranate, blackberries, pecans, and cranberries all contain ellagic acid.

We have analyzed tens of thousands of people, and only about 50% of the people actually benefit from eating more foods containing ellagic acid.

3. You’re probably eating too much protein (and it may be causing inflammation).
When you think high-protein diet, you think paleo, keto, and high-performance diets.

Protein is considered good for you. It helps build muscle and provide energy—but if you eat too much, it can cause inflammation and decrease longevity.

We can analyze the activity of your microbiome to determine if you are eating too much protein that feeds protein-fermenting bacteria like Alistipes putredinis and Tannerella forsythia, and if these organisms are producing harmful substances such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, p-cresol, or putrescine. These substances can damage your gut lining and lead to things like leaky gut.

4. Something’s fishy. Are “healthy foods” causing heart disease?
Choline in certain foods can get converted by bacteria into a substance called trimethylamine (TMA) that is associated with heart disease when it gets absorbed into your body and converted to TMAO. However, TMA conversion doesn’t happen in individuals without these types of bacteria in their microbiome.

We can see the TMA production pathways and many of the gammaproteobacteria that do this conversion.

What foods contain choline? Liver, salmon, chickpeas, split peas, eggs, navy beans, peanuts, and many others.

Before you decide to go full-on pescatarian or paleo, you may want to check if your microbiome is producing TMA with that salmon or steak.

5. Hold up, Iron Man. We can see inflammation from too much iron.
Minerals like iron in your food can, in certain inflammatory microbial environments, promote growth of pathogens like Esherichia, Shigella, and Salmonella.

Maybe it wasn’t just that raw chicken that gave you food poisoning, but your toxic microbiome that made you sick.

On the other hand, when you don’t have enough iron, you could become anemic leading to weakness and shortness of breath.

So, just like Iron Man, it’s about finding your balance so that you can fly.

6. Are you anxious or stressed? Your poop will tell you.
Our gut and brain are connected via the vagus nerve. A large majority of neurotransmitters are either produced or consumed by our microbiome. In fact, some 90% of all serotonin (a feel-good neurotransmitter) is produced by your gut microbiome and not by your brain.

When you have a toxic microbiome that’s producing a large amount of toxins like hydrogen sulfide, the lining of your gut starts to deteriorate into what’s known as leaky gut. Think of leaky gut as your gut not having healthy borders or boundaries. And when this happens, all kinds of disease can emerge. When the barrier of the gut breaks down, it starts a chain reaction causing low-grade chronic inflammation—which has been identified as a potential source of depression and higher levels of anxiety, in addition to many other chronic diseases.

We’re not saying you shouldn’t meditate, but if you want to get the most out of your meditation and really reduce your stress levels, make sure you are eating the right food that promotes a healthy microbiome.

7. Your microbiome is better than Red Bull.
If you want more energy, get your microbiome back into balance.

No you don’t need three pots of coffee to keep you going, you just need a balanced microbiome.

Your microbiome is responsible for calorie extraction, or creating energy, through pathways such as the Tricarboxylic acid cycle. Our bodies depend on the energy that our microbiome produces.

How much energy we get from our food is dependent on how efficient our microbiome is at converting the food into energy. High-performing microbiomes are excellent at converting food into energy. This is great when you are an athlete and need the extra energy, but if you don’t use up the energy it may be the source of some of those unwanted pounds.

If the microbes can’t or won’t metabolize the glucose (sugar) that you eat, it will be stored as fat. If the microbes are extracting too many calories from your food or producing lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and causing metabolic endotoxemia leading to activation of toll-like receptors and insulin resistance you may end up storing what you eat as fat.

Think of your microbiome as Doc Brown’s car from the future—it can take pretty much anything and turn it into fuel if it’s strong and resilient enough.

8. We can see your joint pain in your poop.
Got joint pain? Your microbiome can tell you why.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a key pro-inflammatory molecule made by some of your microbes. If your microbes are making too much LPS, it can wreak havoc on your immune system by putting it into overdrive. When your immune system goes on the warpath there is often collateral damage to your joints and other body parts.

Perhaps balancing your microbiome is a better solution than reaching for the glucosamine. Think of your microbiome as the top general of your immune army. It puts your immune system through basic training and determines when it goes to war.

Ideally, your immune system wins the quick battle and gets some rest, but sometimes if your microbiome keeps it on constant high alert it becomes a long, drawn-out war resulting in chronic inflammation and chronic diseases.

Are you really “getting older” or is your microbiome just making you “feel” older because it keeps giving warnings to your immune system ultimately leading to chronic pain?

Before you throw in the towel on your favorite activities, check your microbiome. And, if you have anything with “itis” in it, it’s possible that when you balance your microbiome the inflammation from your “itis” will be reduced.

9. Your gut is doing the talking for your mouth.
When you have low stomach acid, your mouth bacteria makes it down to your GI tract.

Stomach acid is there to protect you from the bacteria in your mouth and the parasites and fungi that are in your food. If you don’t have enough of it, the bacteria in your mouth will invade your gut. This invasion is associated with and a risk factor for autoimmune disease and inflammation in the gut.

We are learning that low stomach acid is perhaps one of the major causes of chronic disease. This stomach acid is essential to kill mouth bacteria and help us digest our food.

What kinds of things cause low stomach acid? Stress and antacids like Nexium, Zantac, and Prilosec.

10. Carbs can be protein precursors.
Rejoice! Perhaps carbs aren’t as bad as we thought (as long as your microbiome is up to the task). We can see if some of the starches you eat can be made into amino acids by the microbiome.

Our microbiome makes 20% of our branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) for us, and it will adapt to make these vital BCAAs for us in almost any way it can.

Essentially, your microbiome is hooking up carbons and hydrogens into different formulations of BCAAs, depending on what you feed it. The microbiome is excellent at adapting and pivoting based on the food you feed it and the environment that it’s in.

So, good news: Carbs are protein precursors, as long as you have the right microbiome.

Stop Talking Sh*t Now
Your microbiome is a world class entrepreneur that can take low-grade sources of food and turn them into valuable and useable energy.

You have a best friend and confidant within you that is working wonders to make sure you have energy and that all of your needs are met.

And, just like a best friend, if you take great care of your microbiome, it will take great care of you.

Given the research emerging daily about the microbiome and its importance on your quality of life, prioritizing the health of your microbiome is essential.

When you have a healthy microbiome, you’ll have a healthy life.

It’s now clear that some of the greatest insights for your health will come from your poop.

It’s time to stop talking sh*t and get your sh*t together. Your life may depend on it.

Viome can help you identify what your microbiome is actually doing. The combination of Viome’s metatranscriptomic technology and cutting-edge artificial intelligence is paving a brand new path forward for microbiome health.

The Real Reason You Aren’t Making More Money (And What To Do About It)

I work with many entrepreneurs, solopreneuers and soon-to-be-entrepreneurs who all desire the same thing: more freedom.

And a part of that freedom comes the desire for more money.

But, the money seems to elude many. Why?

Most of the reasons people give for why they aren’t making more money are symptoms of a deeper issue.

Here are some common symptoms I see:

– They think they don’t have the time.
– They think they need more money to get started.
– They are delaying (forever) quitting their soul-sucking job.
– They are not staying consistent with best practices to grow their business… like publishing consistent content online.
– They are not making offers or invitations for people to work with them.
– They seem to freeze when anything “tech” related shows up, even if using the “tech” is the same or easier as using Facebook, Netflix or other apps they use w/o stress.
– They spend lots of money easily on things that do not matter or more the ball forward in their career, however, are penny pinchers when it comes to investing in things that will help them grow their business or make more money.
– They are scared to go live on Facebook/IG, etc.
– They think they have to have it all done perfectly.
– They need a plan that they are 100% sure will work.

And many more.

What’s the root of all this? If these are just symptoms, what’s the real cause?

Simple: unhealed emotional trauma.

You see, trauma changes your brain.

It creates a “new normal” in your body where you are constantly aware of, looking for, being vigilant to prevent… more trauma.

And, unhealed emotional trauma comes in many forms. Sometimes it can be big and sometimes is can be small.

And, many times, it’s not about what happened… but how you held it afterwards.

It’s commonly reported that it can be more traumatic to suffer alone or silently for a long time, than the actual events of trauma.

So, after we experience trauma (and we all do to one degree or another) – the brain changes. The nervous system adapts and takes on the stance of defense and vigilance.

This is the new normal.

The body is always looking to maintain homeostasis (aka balance).

It’s like a thermostat… never too hot and never too cold. Just right.

For purposes of this blog, it’s… never too rich… never too poor… it’s just right.

The reason why you aren’t making more money is because your nervous system doesn’t want you to do anything new.

Anything that could disturb the balance it’s working to maintain for your survival.

Many of the habits I listed above… the symptoms if you will – all represent taking your body and nervous system out of homeostasis (out of balance) and pose a generalized threat to your survival.

So, even though most of the “tech” is easy to figure out, your nervous system will make you all confused, scared and want to give up.

Why? To keep homeostasis.

So, you’ve got to intervene and send your body signals you are safe. That is where meditation, trauma work, a peer group to support you… and a mentor come into play.

You can’t intervene on your nervous system alone.

You need support.

Making more money isn’t about some whiz/bang/boom strategy du jour.

It’s about feeling safe in your self, feeling safe in your choices and knowing that no matter what… you got this and you won’t die.

Going live on Facebook won’t’ kill you.
Figuring out the “tech” won’t kill you.
Making an offer won’t kill you.
Heck, even getting rejected won’t kill you.

But… staying the same… not changing… that is slowly killing your purpose and your soul.

If you need help and coaching to do your trauma work, to breakthrough these inner blocks… that’s exactly why I wrote my book, Claim Your Power.

It’s a 40-Day journey to discover the hidden blocks (traumas) that are holding you back… and how to overcome them and make friends with them.

Claim Your Power can help you turn your nervous system into your ally… and support you every step of the way. I even created a free coaching course to go along with it, so you don’t have to do it alone.

What is Depression? New Discoveries Could Help Us Better Understand & Heal

What is depression?

The American Psychiatric Association states:

“Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home.”

The APA also states the 1 in 6 people will experience depression in their lifetime.

Additionally, the APA states there are four primary factors that play a role in depression:

1. Biochemistry: Differences in certain chemicals in the brain may contribute to symptoms of depression.

2. Genetics: Depression can run in families. For example, if one identical twin has depression, the other has a 70 percent chance of having the illness sometime in life.

3. Personality: People with low self-esteem, who are easily overwhelmed by stress, or who are generally pessimistic appear to be more likely to experience depression.

4. Environmental factors: Continuous exposure to violence, neglect, abuse or poverty may make some people more vulnerable to depression.

And, these are all factors, indeed.

However, cutting-edge science is showing us that depression is not entirely what we thought it was.

There are four more factors that must be considered when evaluating and treating the cause of depression.

They are:

1. Gut health.
2. Unhealed emotional trauma.
3. The health of the Vagus nerve.
4. A sense of Purpose or meaning.

Let me explain.

You see 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut.

And, when we have low serotonin, we tend to have lower moods, and this can contribute to a state of depression.

So, in order for our body to restore proper production of serotonin, it will never come from a drug. We must work to restore our bodies own production of serotinin in the gut.

Therefore, gut health is vital in helping elevate your mood and help you get out of a depressive state.

Next, depression is correlated to unhealed emotional trauma.

Harvard reports that emotional trauma, both in childhood and later in life, leaves you most susceptible to depression.

If you have any kind of unhealed trauma (that can be big, or small), you are much more likely to develop depression.

An emerging model of how humans process and deal with stress may explain a very practical purpose for depression.

The vagus nerve influences many functions of the body.

One of which is immobilization or feining death.

The fight or flight response is very popular and well known. However, it is not the only survival response we have.

We are also programmed to feign death in the presence of a threat.

So, depression may not simply be what we thought. It may also be an ancient Survival Pattern designed to help us withdrawal and pretend to be dead, in order to survive.

Our bodies are genius at survival. So much so, that depression may be our way of staying physically safe from a perceived threat.

When you add in unhealed emotional trauma, the body has a good reason to pretend to be dead, so that it doesn’t experience the trauma again.

Understanding that depression may be a Survival Pattern helps us have self-compassion and compassion for anyone who has struggled with depression.

Perhaps it’s not them. Perhaps it’s an automatic response to stay safe.

When we see that gut health, unhealed trauma and our body’s nervous system are perhaps causing depression or at least contributing to it in a significant want, now we see why just telling someone to “be happy” is perhaps one of the worst things we can do.

Having depression doesn’t mean you are a bad person or that there is something wrong with you.

Perhaps, it does mean that something painful happened to you. And your body is trying to cope as best it can.

Perhaps having depression means you are not producing the neurotransmitters you need to feel better, because you do not have a healthy gut.

Perhaps having depression means that you are trying to stave off any further threats and survive.

Perhaps depression is an appropriate response to an unhealthy gut, unhealed trauma and a scared nervous system that wants you to play dead and be safe.

Perhaps we need to see depression differently.

Which brings me to the fourth point.

When was the last time a medical or mental health professional asked you…

“Are you living your Purpose? Do you have meaning in your life?”

It seems odd for me to suggest this. However, the research is clear.

A recent study shows that having purpose and meaning in your life literally helps you live longer.

The study states:

“Having a purpose in life appears to widely buffer against mortality risk across the adult years.”

It can be very hard to have purpose in your life when you are shut down, don’t have a healthy gut and have unprocessed trauma.

However, purpose can be a doorway to help you get free.

It’s vital to find meaning in your pain or depression. To ask for help. And to help others.

You don’t have to make some grandiose stand and be a super hero.

But, you can make small steps every day to help others. To find what’s meaningful. To get outside yourself and help other people.

This is a vital part of reducing your symptoms of depression.

Give the above, perhaps now you can see that wishing for your depression to go away because you took a pill – it not lined up with the most up to date research.

Yes, prescription medication can save lives, and many times we need to be on it for a long while.

I am on Adderall XR for the forseeable future. However, I do not believe that this drug will be the thing I need to feel better.

Drugs can save lives, but they can’t make your trauma go away or restore balance to your gut. Drugs can’t give you purpose.

They can save your life in the short term, but in the long term, without doing the rest of the work, drugs will just help you cope better.

So, what to do next?

1. Use cutting-edge technology to improve your gut health.
